Tim Buckley

There are many reasons to love this man. The sonic voice though always does it for me.

Tiny Tim

This man reminded me of me as a youth when I was a youth. A tough one to work out.

Frank Zappa

Frank Zappa. Skim the swedish intro and go straight to the play. This man really does.

Arnold Schoenberg

I am a long term lover of Arnold Schoenberg’s music and Pierrot Lunaire is one of those drop-dead gorgeous pieces of music theatre, that sits so open to reinterpretation, that it remains fresh and delicious, holding that special ability to surprise and delight, with each new production. I found this on a YouTube trawl of old favourites the other night and, not having heard it for some time, found myself drawn irresistably from the moment the sprechstimme style singing began.

Robert Wyatt

Another life long companion. Robert Wyatt. I remain totally in awe of the man. Check out his music and if you want to know more, the book Different Every Time is very worth a look.

Lol Coxhill

I’ve been a fan of Lol Coxhill for getting on to fifty odd years now. He improvises to a level of discordant that seriously appeals, taking you from razorslash across the back of the eyes to pure liquid velvet via a rasp route that makes the ears question their purpose. Yes, I’m a fan. This video though is a special and typical of the man. He takes the sound and absolutely splashes it. This is music experimentation at it’s best. Watch the video and you can see what goes into the sound he produces. Then put on the headphones, close your eyes and really understand what the piece is about. He is truly extraordinary.

Thomas D.

Thomas D. Millionen Legionen. A great track, satisfying and pleasing to view. May contain traces of meat.

Alban Berg

Some late night listening for taking in the stars. The waning moon is giving very little light at the moment and with this as an old friend, time bends easily.

Captain Beefheart

This cropped up on one of my follows today. The song is from Bluejeans & Moonbeams but the movie it plays over is a segment from an old Bergman classic, The Virgin Spring. It’s a strange mix that just put me momentarily in a really nice place. Before listening, please remember that Captain Beefheart is a life choice.
